Mark Mulder retires

Curveball76 Mon Feb 15, 2010 12:15 pm

Brewers pitching coach Rick Peterson has confirmed that left-hander Mark Mulder has decided to retire, reports Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. It was first reported by Lance Allan of TMJ4 in Milwaukee on Sunday night. The 32-year-old left-hander has decided to hang it up rather than attempt a comeback on a minor league contract. Mulder retires after nine big league seasons with the Athletics and Cardinals, compiling a career record of 103-60 to go along with a 4.18 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Mulder was a two-time All-Star and finished second in the American League Cy Young award voting in 2001 when he won 21 games as a 23 year old. It's a real shame injuries had to cut his career short. I don't know why he had all the hate on him. I liked him, and wish he could have made a come back. It's not his fault Jocketty made a stupid trade.

Thats the problem. The hate wasn't for Mulder, but for a FO that traded away the future for a stud with problems. (See Mulders last half year with the A's before we aquired him)

After the 2004 season, Haren was traded in a package that included right-handed reliever Kiko Calero, and top hitting prospect Daric Barton to the Oakland Athletics for Mark Mulder.

He was considered an early front-runner for the 2007 American League Cy Young Award, which was eventually won by CC Sabathia.

Furthermore, in 2007, Haren had one of the best seasons among any pitcher in the majors. Haren finished in the top ten in the American League in wins, with 15, strikeouts, with 192, and finished in the top three in the AL in ERA with 3.07.

Haren was selected to the 2008 All-Star game.

He finished 2008 with an impressive 3.33 ERA to go along with a 16-8 win-loss record, and a career-high 206 strikeouts.

On August 6, 2008, Haren agreed to a four-year, $44.75 million contract and a team option for the 2013. (This hurts. No matter how you look at it, this really hurts the Cardinals fans)

Haren was also selected a 2009 NL All-Star.

In 2009 he was named # 33 on the Sporting News' list of the 50 greatest current players in baseball. A panel of 100 baseball people, many of them members of the Baseball Hall of Fame and winners of major baseball awards, was polled to arrive at the list.

I still support that trade. No one knew Haren would develop like he did and many thought Barton was the real meat in that trade anyway.

Mulder was at the time either the first or second leading pitcher in wins over the previous five years and to acquire a guy like that it takes some talent.

Mulder retired in 2010, should have done it after the 2004 season.

It's being reported now that he hasn't made that decision ... yet ... according to MLBtraderumors.com

Yeah, I still support it to this day as well. Don't get me wrong, I liked what I saw from Haren and figured he had some potential. But there was no way what I saw and what I liked about it was going to stop me (if I was the GM) from sending Haren to Oakland for a stud like Mulder.

Maybe he feels in his heart of hearts that
his arm problems are irrepairable, and is
plain sick of it all.

Maybe He can someday be a tudor for lefties....

He did good over there, and I think he really
appreciates that.

I had a sneaky feelin Haren was gonna be a
bonifide pitcher for some reason.
