Looper activated Sunday?

NEW YORK -- It appears as though Cardinals right-hander Braden Looper, on the disabled list since June 18 with a sore right shoulder, is going to be activated in time to start against the Reds in Cincinnati on Sunday. The series finale between the Cardinals and Mets at Shea Stadium was called off due to heavy rains and thunder storms that were forecast in the New York area on Thursday night. No makeup date was announced, and there's a chance that the game won't be played unless there's a need for...

Molina back in the line-up

Molina had been out 26 games with a fracture of his left wrist. Manager Tony La Russa is looking forward to having No. 1 catcher Yadier Molina back in the lineup. "I thought the first half, he was playing as good as any catcher in baseball," La Russa said. While Molina wasn't hitting much, batting .273 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 41 games, his defense and handling of the St. Louis pitching staff are essentials the team will need if it hopes to make a run during the long hot days of this summe...

In a moment of positive news for the Cardinals, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Carpenter threw 50 pitches off a mound on Wednesday — no curveballs — in his second mound session since undergoing surgery.

Cardinals get Maroth

A team in desperate need of starting pitching added a starter. The Cardinals acquired veteran left-hander Mike Maroth from the Detroit Tigers on Friday for a player to be named later. Maroth, 29, has spent six seasons with the Tigers. In 2007 he is 5-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 starts. The lefty topped 200 innings in both 2004 and 2005 before missing much of 2006 due to bone chips in his pitching elbow. He last pitched on Monday, so he could be available as early as Saturday against the Phillies. ...

Carpenter to throw again on Wednesday

After having a successful throwing session off the mound on Sunday in Oakland, Chris Carpenter will do the same thing again on Wednesday at Busch Stadium.

La Russa said he would throw on Wednesday and then again over the weekend, with a little more intensity. Carpenter underwent left elbow surgery earlier in the season.
