On Thursday, the Cardinals announced that Franklin signed a two-year contract extension with a team option for the third season that could keep Franklin in a Cardinals uniform through 2010.
"It's awesome," Franklin said. "They showed me that they like what I'm doing. Security is always a good thing. It's always good to know where you're going to be for a couple of years."

Tony La Russa said that with Scott Spiezio's availability uncertain for the immediate future, the Cardinals are considering a temporary move to avoid playing short-handed the remainder of this week. Spiezio, who has an infected finger, took batting practice and felt a sharp sting in the index finger when he hit the ball wrong. "So why punish him?" La Russa said.

Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein received three shots to combat inflammation and soreness that is related to back trouble, manager Tony La Russa said Tuesday. The hope had been to have Eckstein off the 15-day disabled list and in the lineup this week, but a reoccurrence of tightness Sunday sent him to receive more aggressive treatment Monday. The shots mean Eckstein will not return from the DL until after next week's All-Star break.

For the second time this season, Reyes was optioned to Triple-A Memphis, still without a big-league victory this season. The right-hander was sent down to make room on the roster for Braden Looper, who came off the disabled list to start Monday's game against the D-Backs. Reyes made three starts since his first recall and was hit with two losses and a no-decision. In his three starts, Reyes gave up 12 earned runs in 14 1/3 innings.
