Cards-Mets rainout rescheduled

The Cardinals and New York Mets will make up their June 28 rainout at Shea Stadium on Sept. 27, the clubs announced. The game falls on a previously scheduled off day between three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals are now scheduled to end the season by playing 20 consecutive days. They have only one off day (Sept. 10) in the season's final month.

Spezio placed on 15-Day DL

Spiezio was placed on the 15-day disabled list, backdated to Saturday, because of an infection in his left index finger. He'll be replaced on the roster by infielder Brendan Ryan, who only Friday was sent back to Memphis when shortstop David Eckstein was activated. The Cardinals travel to Florida and Atlanta today, but Spiezio left the team and is on his way back to St. Louis.

Welcome Back David Eckstein!

Eckstein was activated from the disabled list, and rookie infielder Brendan Ryan was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Eckstein missed 23 games from June 14-July 13 because of leg and back injuries.

Carpenter experiences setback in rehab

Rehabilitating starter Chris Carpenter's next start is "undetermined" after the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner suffered renewed stiffness and swelling of his right elbow following Sunday's three-inning start for Class A Palm Beach. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Friday that Carpenter suffered "a bit of a setback" after a 39-pitch appearance and could not provide a timetable for when his ace might resume his throwing program.

The club has based much of its optimism for a second-half push ...

Wellemeyer placed on 15 day DL

After receiving an MRI on Monday, it was revealed that Wellemeyer sprained his throwing elbow in the fifth inning of Sunday's game when his elbow made contact with his left knee on his follow through. As a result, the right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list and reliever Andy Cavazos was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to fill his spot in the bullpen. The doctors informed Wellemeyer that there is no structural damage to the elbow, but throwing during the injury could cause more serious...

Tyler Greene aggravated his right knee

In his first at-bat since June 16, Double-A Springfield's Tyler Greene aggravated his right knee Sunday and had to leave the game. Greene has made some progress offensively this year, hitting .244/.309/.448 in 221 at-bats, so the injuries have been poorly timed. The Cardinals can still hold out hope that he'll develop into a utilityman, but he's not the player the team thought it was getting when it make him a 2004 first-round pick.
