St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period of April 26-May 2, 2010.

Freese recorded a Major League-best 11 RBI last week, while batting .462 (12-for-26) with three home runs. The rookie also posted a .500 on-base percentage and slugged .923. His 12 hits and 24 total bases were good for second in the NL.

Freese celebrated his 27th birthday on Wednesday with a two-RBI performance, going 2-for-3, and helping the Cardinals to a 6-0 win over visiting Atlanta. His six RBI in a 10-4 victory against the Braves on Thursday set a career-high and were the most by a Cardinals rookie since 1957 when MLB established the status for a rookie.

His .355 batting average is tied for second in the National League and leads all NL rookies while his 16 RBI are tied for second amongst rookies in the Majors. During his current six-game hitting streak, the Missouri native has a .545 (12-for-22) average, and he has homered in each of his last three games. This is David’s first career weekly award.
