Pujols earns 2nd MVP award Albert Pujols won his second NL MVP award, powering past Philadelphia star Ryan Howard by a comfortable margin Monday. Pujols hit .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBIs while playing with a sore right elbow. Pujols got 18 of the 32 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and had 369 points. The first baseman added to the MVP award he won in 2005. Pujols was remarkably consistent all year—a trait he’s demonstrated throughout his career. He is the only big leaguer to hit at least 30 home runs in his first eight seasons in the majors, and has finished in the top 10 of the NL MVP voting each year.

The awards are beginning to roll in for Albert Pujols. The Cardinals first baseman was named the Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week on Monday in what could be the first of many honors on the horizon. Pujols batted .588 (10-for-17) in the final week, with home runs in three straight games and 10 RBIs. Perhaps Pujols' final push will propel him to a second MVP Award. He finished the season with a .357 average, 37 homers and 116 RBIs in 148 games. He also set a career h...

A year ago, Tony La Russa had to think long and hard about what he wanted for the upcoming season. This time around, the only question is whether he's invited back.
La Russa said Monday that he has every intention of returning to manage the Cardinals in 2009, pending the wishes of ownership and the team's front office. Considering he took a team widely predicted to finish below .500 to an 86-76 finish, those wishes would seem to be a foregone conclusion.
"I was at the owners' last night," ...

Joel Pineiro and Todd Wellemeyer are cleared to rejoin the team after suffering from injuries. Brad Thompson also made his first rehab start at Triple-A Memphis.
Pineiro has been on the DL since May 21 with a right groin strain and likely will be activated this week. Wellemeyer experienced right elbow inflammation after his Thursday start at Washington and will rejoin the starting rotation immediately.
"All-in-all, the news is favorable on three of the four players," Cardinals general ma...

With a number of pitchers already on the disabled list, the Cardinals got more bad news on Monday night and will have to place Adam Wainwright on the DL. Wainwright, who will officially go on the DL on Tuesday, is suffering from a finger sprain. The Cardinals' de facto ace injured his right middle finger while pitching against the Houston Astros on Saturday.
Wainwright said he felt a little pain in his finger prior to the start. He had to be taken out in the sixth inning while pitching to Da...

Brad Thompson's first rehab start did not go as well as he had hoped. Making his first appearance in a game since April 22, Thompson lasted 3 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Only scheduled to throw 45 pitches, Thompson threw 52 pitches -- only 29 of them were strikes.
"I got a lot of ground balls, which is nice," Thompson said. "I left a few pitches up and they took advantage of it, but all in all, I have to take it as a positive step."
The Cardinals placed Thompson on th...
